Lupita Nyong’o was born in Mexico, raised in Kenya – her father is Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o, of the Kisumu county in Kenya, and educated in the USA – Nyong’o holds a BA from Hampshire College and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama. It isn’t a surprise then that she can speak English, Spanish, Swahili, Luo and conversational Italian.

She has a number of stage credits, but made her acting debut in the award-winning MTV drama series, Shuga, in 2009. Also in the same year, she wrote, produced and directed the documentary, In My Genes, which takes a look at the treatment of the albino population in Kenya. Just three years later, and she is starring with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars like Brad Pitt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Liam Neeson.

Nyongo’o stars in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave, with Brad Pitt and Chiwetel Ejiofor, where she plays the role of  Patesy, one of the slave girls. The movie is scheduled to be released on October 18. She will star with Liam Neeson in Non-Stop, an airplane thriller.
